My main interest is to develop effective approaches to enhance the nutritional status and quality of diets, using intervention and observational study designs, guided by rigorous assessment of evidence and systematic reviews. My group also develops new methods regarding collection, management and use of food intake data and ways to increase quality of nutrition research and capacity for better policies and practices in public health nutrition. We collaborate with FAO and Bioversity International on the role of food biodiversity for healthier diets. I am the PI of a clinical trial to test the health effect of a balanced energy protein supplement on health and nutrition of women and children, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation (www.misame3.ugent.be). I am also budget holder of the of the Nutrition Research Facility, which aims to provide improved knowledge and evidence for EU policy and programme design, management and monitoring & evaluation in order to reach better nutrition outcomes.
As director of the program MSc Nutrition and Food Systems, I am lecturing courses in nutrition disorders, food and nutrition policies, and food and nutritional epidemiology.
