Ghent University offers a unique proposal: the collaboration between veterinarians, physicians and scientists from different disciplines present at Ghent University takes the research to a higher level and creates many opportunities for innovation. At our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine these innovations can be tested in our own facilities and on the target species.

Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Department of Food Technology, Safety & Health
My group is working in the field of safety management and risk assessment in food systems at department of food technology, safety and health, on the faculty of bio science engineering, UGent.
Our research discipline is on governing food safety and food quality across a food system (farm-to-fork) and contains two major research lines: Quality/food safety management systems and risk analysis. Food quality/safety management systems are focusing on guaranteeing quality (broadly defined) and food safety (hazards) at micro/meso level (i.e. post-harvest actors such as food industries, supporting organizations, sector associations). Complementary to this, risk analysis (risk assessment, risk communication and risk management) is conducted at macro level and is addressing food safety risk from population perspective in preparation of policy decision (risk management). The combination of both complementary research lines is unique in Belgium, even in EU and international and delivers multidisciplinary insights in the interaction of micro/meso and macro level in governing food safety/quality of our food system.
I am lecturing on the topics food safety management, quality management and risk assessment/risk management at Ghent University (Campus Coupure, Schoonmeersen and GUGC Campus Incheon South Korea). I am also an active member of BIOHAZ EFSA panel 2024-2029.
